Mount Newman is often named Mt Whaleback as the two pits are closely positioned together. Both are owned by BHP Billiton. Mount Newman is located approximately 6km from the township of Newman and was established in 1968.
The mine produces iron ore its open cut operation and is regarded as the largest open cut mine measuring 5km long by 1.5km wide.
Mount Newman employees are either employed as FIFO workers from Perth or reside in the township of Newman where owner, BHP, provides subsidized rent and expenses.
