The Koolan Island mining operation is located off the northern Kimberley coast of Western Australia. Over 70 million tonnes of high grade iron ore has been mined here since 1959.
Koolan island has probably the best scenery available in mining. The mine site is a little behind in the times but still provides the basic amenities you would expect at your average mine site. The processing plant is pretty run down but was still operating reasonably well when I left there. Typical iron ore dust everywhere but awesome view of the ocean!
The camp has motel type accommodation due to it being an island and is not to bad. The food was pretty good too, Great sea food selection.
Visually spectacular .
I worked at Koolan Island back in 1985 driving haul pacs, back then it was a thriving lil place to be absolutely beautiful scenary we use to go for yacht cruises all over the kimberelys best time I ever had . loved it .
